The benefit of a Doula while giving birth:

A recent Systematic Review of 15 gold
standard Randomized Controlled Trials
studied doula support of over 13,000
women. This study found that pregnant women supported by a doula were:

26% less likely to give birth by cesarean section

41% less likely to give birth with vacuum extraction or forceps

28% less likely to use any analgesia or anesthesia

36% less likely to be dissatisfied with or negatively rate their birth experience

An international study by Klaus et al, involving over 1,500 women giving birth, found that mothers who received doula support had shorter labors and a greatly reduced perception of pain.

Below are some of the other benefits that this study revealed:

25% shorter labors

50% reduction in caesarean births

30% reduction in the mother's need for medication

60% reduction in epidural requests

40% reduction in forceps delivery

increased support by the partner

Doulas and Dads

"I've run a number of marathons. I've done a lot of hiking with a heavy backpack, and I've worked for forty hours straight on-call; but going through labour with my wife was more strenuous and exhausting than any of these experiences."

"Asking your husband to be your sole guide through labour is like asking him to lead the way on a climb of Mt. Everest. He may be smart and trustworthy, you may love him, but in the Himalayas, you'd both be better off with a Sherpa!"
